China has approved a plan to launch a new State-level development zone in Dalian, Northeast China's Liaoning Province, according to a statement posted on the central bank's website on Wednesday, a move aimed at revitalizing the regional economy.

The State Council has approved a plan to turn the Jinpu New Area in Dalian the 10th State-level new zone on June 23, the statement said.

The zone will be developed into a strategic area opening up to Northeast Asian region and a key area which contributes to the revitalization of the old production base of the Northeast China region.

The new zone will also play an active role in promoting Dalian as an international shipping and logistics hub.

The zone is located in the central south part of Dalian, covering the whole administrative area of Jinzhou district of Dalian and part of Pulandian city, with a total area of 2,299 square kilometers.

China approved the Qingdao West Coast New Zone in June as the ninth State-level new zone following the Xixian New Zone in Northwest China's Shaanxi Province and the Gui'an New Zone in Southwest China's Guizhou Province approved in January.
