Sales of new cars in Spain will growby 3.5 percent in 2013 compared with 2012, Spanish media reportedon Monday citing sources from Spanish automotive industry.

According to the sector, 723,700 units will be sold in 2013, 3.5percent more than that in 2012, despite the increase is the lowestfigure over the last 24 years.

Only in December sales will grow by 20 percent to a total of61,500 purchases compared with the same month in 2012, theautomotive sector predicted for the last month of the year, afterregistering several consecutive rises in sales despite the economiccrisis.

This growth in sales was the result of two incentive policiesimplemented by the Spanish government, namely the Plan PIMA Aireand Plan PIVE, which helped boost domestic demand in times ofeconomic crisis.

The Plan PIVE consists of giving 2,000 euros (2,762 U.S.dollars) to purchasers who change their 10-year-old car for a newone with lower fuel consumption and emissions, while the Plan PIMAAire aims at boosting sales of motorcycles, moped, electricbicycles and vans by giving prospective buyers between 600 and 200euros depending on the vehicle.

The industry reported that a total of 53,600 vehicles were soldup to Monday, which meant a 25-percent increase in comparison withthe same month in 2012.

In November the sector had said they expected to sell around715,000 units in 2013, while predicting a total of 800,000purchases for 2014. Between 2015 and 2020 the sector expects tosell 1.2 million units every year and hopes that the governmentextends the Plan PIVE and the PIMA Aire to help boost demand.
