French manufacturers sold less new vehicles in 2013 from a year ealier as morose economic climate forced consumers to clinch their belts, French Car Sales Federation (CCFA) announced on Thursday.

Last year, more than 1.79 million units were sold across France, down by 5.7 percent from the previous year, the lowest sales since 1997.

However, on a monthly basis, French auto market gained momentum with a sale of 175,336 new cars compared to 160,314 vehicles sold in 2012, according to the federation.

Sales of French home-made brands jumped by 22 percent due to strong performance of Renault, France's second main car maker which saw its sales growing by 37.9 percent.

PSA Peugeot Citroen group sold 10.6 more units to 46,765 units, the CCFA added in a statement.

However, foreign brands recorded an downward trend after providing 86,600 new cars to the 65 million population market.

"French groups, which have registered big volumes in December, pulled the market up and improved a very declining slope of 2013," Francois Roudier, spokesman for the CCFA was quoted as saying by local media.

"We are still in a very low market. We think that in 2014 the market should be stable at a low level," he added.
