The Spanish economy grew by 0.6 percent in the second quarter of the year, according to initial data published Wednesday by the Spanish National Institute of Statistics (INE).

The figure was 0.2 percent higher than the first quarter of 2014, and 1.2 percent higher than a year ago.

The INE said domestic demand had improved while external demand fell. More information will be provided when the data is confirmed on Aug. 29.

Spanish Minister of Economy Luis de Guindos earlier this week said Spain would grow more than expected in 2014 because of increases in domestic demand, which was confirmed Wednesday by the INE.

De Guindos had said Spain's economy would grow by close to 1.5 percent this year and 2 percent in 2015, which will force the government to change its economic forecasts announced in April.

INE data shows Spain's economy has been growing continuously for a year after a long economic recession.
