China's inflation accelerated in March and the decline in factory-gate prices deepened, National Bureau of Statistics data released today in Beijing showed.

The consumer price index rose 2.4 percent from a year earlier, the bureau said. That compares with a 2 percent gain in February.

Producer prices fell 2.3 percent from a year earlier. The median projection of 47 analysts was for a decline of 2.2 percent after a 2 percent drop the previous month. The index has declined for 25 months, the longest stretch since a 31-month drop that started in 1997.

Premier Li Keqiang last month set an inflation target of 3.5 percent for 2014, the same goal as in 2013. Consumer-price gains have remained below that figure since April 2012.
