BMW launches 3 Series sedan in Shanghai

The long-awaited debut of the latest generation of BMW 3 Series was celebrated in the F1 racing field of Shanghai Sunday. And it definitely caught the public's attention. It is the first time BMW is launching its latest version of the sedan in China with a simultaneous marketing campaign in other global markets. BMW says, this reflects the company's strong confidence and promise to the Chinese market.

The latest version is the 4th generation BMW 3 Series since 1975. Through 30 years of endeavor, the company has sold more than 10 million vehicles of the 3 Series. BMW will build up 2 new production lines with its Chinese partner BMW Brilliance Automotive for BMW 320i and 325i, while the new model 330i will be imported to China from overseas.

All 3 new models of the series are equipped with 6-speed manual or the optional Steptronic sequential mode automatic. Anti-burst tyres were selected as one of the standard collocations, which means if all of the four tyres are burst accidently, the car could still run at 250 kilometers an hour. The 6 cylindered engine are extremely power saving, making it possible to use 5 to 7 percent less fuel than last generation, while meeting the emission standard Euro 4.

All three models are priced quite reasonably. 330i's reference price is 550 thousand yuan, while 325i and 320i with top collocations are priced at around 450 and 365 thousand yuan respectively. BMW is seen to diverse its price range to meet the aspiration for its global fame by Chinese car-lovers.

BMW Brilliance Automotive is a joint venture between luxury car maker BMW and Brilliance China Automotive Holdings, in which BMW holds 50 percent of the stakes. The JV recorded sales of over 10 thousand locally produced BMW sedans in the January-August period, topping its 2004 annual revenue by 15 percent. It also plans to expand its dealer network from the current 40 to 60 by the end of the year.
