Global automakers have attached greater importance to innovation, resulting in a steady increase in the number of patents application in automobile industry. According to a recent research conducted by the Center of Automobile Management (CAM) in Germany, Chinese automaker Geely Holding Group has exceeded Daimler Motor Company in the number of patents application.

CAM found that the patent application amount of the 18 international leading companies involved in the research has risen from 45,000 items in 2006 to 53,000 items in 2013., Director of CAM Bratzel said that applications in the power field have increased significantly in the past year.

Among these auto giants, the performance of Geely is beyond expectation. This local Chinese auto company, who has acquired Volvo, applied for 2,718 patents in 2013, exceeding the 2,500 items of old giant Daimler, which fully demonstrates the importance to the technological innovation attached by the Chinese automobile enterprises. The achievement also shows that Geely has caught up to an advanced level in technology.

According to the data of CAM, Japanese Toyota tops the list with 14,000 patents. Bratzel noted that the technology-oriented strategy plays an important role in the development of Toyota. Honda followed Toyota with a number of 6,500, which can be contributed to a strategy similar to that of Toyota. The US GM ranks in the third place, followed by Hyundai of South Korea, a dark house in the auto market during the past two years.

Volkswage, the largest auto maker in Europe, occupies the fifth place with 3,300 applied patents. Despite of the sharp increase in its number of applied patents, its total number far lags behind that of Toyota. However, Bratzel pointed out that it doesn't mean the lack of innovation for the top automaker, which topped the list of research and development capability. "The patent culture of Volkswage is somewhat different. It isn't keen on the application of patents in order to avoid the attention from other rivals," said Bratzel.
