China buys back Dragon Boat Fest domain name from S. Korea
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2006-05-31 16:56

A Chinese official website for the Dragon Boat Festival opened today in Zigui city, Hubei province, hometown of the great poet Qu Yuan whom the festival commemorates.

The Chinese domain name for the website (, however, was first registered by a South Korean company in October last year when the two countries had already competed against each other fiercely in a struggle that aimed to include the Dragon Boat Festival as a world cultural heritage of their own country. The successful registration of the Chinese domain name for the Dragon Boat Festival by a South Korean company added fuel to the flames, and expanded the "war" from traditional field to the cyber world.

According to the "first come, first served" principle adopted as an international norm for domain name registration, the South Korean company had the right to own this domain name legally. Thus, to prevent it from flowing out of China, an investor in Internet domain names bought back the Chinese domain name from the South Korean company at $30,000 dollars, and then donated the domain name to the Zigui government in Hubei, which there upon created a website under this domain name.
