Chips are up as city designers show way

Shanghai's semiconductor industry revenue has jumped 27 percent year-on-year.

This was largely thanks to the growing chip-design and semiconductor-equipment sectors, Jiang Shouleo, Shanghai's Integrated Circuit Industry Association's secretary general said yesterday.

The city's semiconductor industry revenue reached 38.5 billion yuan (US$4.93 billion) last year compared with 30.3 billion yuan in 2005.

Shanghai's integrated circuit industry revenue accounts for about 30 percent of the national level, according to Jiang.

"Chip design firms grew rapidly last year to boost the industry as the sector is the 'brain' of the industry chain," said Jiang.

Local chip design industry revenue was two billion yuan, according to Jiang.

Spreadtrum Communications, a telco chip group based in Pudong's Zhangjiang High-Tech Industrial Park, specializes in home-grown 3G chip development and generated revenue of 800 million yuan last year.

The company is close to a public float, according to media reports.

Meanwhile, Advanced Micro-Fabrication Equipment Inc, a Shanghai-based semiconductor equipment provider, last October attracted US$35 million in second-round funding from a group of investors that includes Goldman Sachs.

Capital expenditure for Chinese semiconductor fabricators will surpass US$9.8 billion from this year to 2008.
