Hong Kong phone operator PCCW Ltd said yesterday it has launched broadcasts of real-time television to the latest generation of mobile phones using a new technology that can accommodate more users.
The company said it will use Cell Multimedia Broadcast, or CMB, technology developed by Chinese mainland company Huawei Technologies Co to broadcast the TV channels to so-called third-generation, or 3G, mobile phones.
The channels include a 24-hour financial channel, ESPN, Star Sports, and a channel showing English Premier League matches, it said.
Alex Arena, PCCW executive director, said the CMB technology enables broadcasts to reach "many more" people simultaneously than streaming or videoconference technology.
He said that with the technology, up to 250 mobile phone users can simultaneously tune in to TV broadcasts within an area covered by one base station, compared to a maximum of 10 users with technologies such as streaming.
