Daqing Oilfield rejuvenated by virtue of technology

Until September 25 of this year, the accumulative petroleum output of Daqing Oilfield has broken through 100 million tons as the independently developed tertiary oil recovery technology has been put into application. As Daqing Oilfield has succeeded in maintaining an annual output over 50 million tons for 27 successive years, it is also possible to ensure that Daqing Oilfield will achieve the goal of maintaining an annual oil and gas equivalent of over 42 million tons till 2010 and 40 million tons till 2020, thus providing a great impulse for Daqing Oilfield to realize its sustainable development.

At present, Daqing Oilfield has become the largest base for the research and development of the tertiary oil recovery technology and the largest production base adopting the technology in the world.

Statistics show that by December 2005, Daqing Oilfield had adopted the polymer flooding technology in its 35 industrial blocks with an area of 314.14 km2, 519 million tons of geological reserves, and 5742 wells totally. The annual output of the tertiary oil recovery reached 12.15 million tons, accounting for 27 percent of the Daqing Oilfield annual output; while the annual oil output with the tertiary oil recovery technology adopted exceeded 10 million tons for five successive years, the recovery ratio in all such industrial blocks increased by 12 percent, resulting in an accumulative increment of 55 million tons to the oil output with an economic value of over RMB 100 billion yuan. Such a result seems that a new field with a reserve of over 100 million tons had been found. When all the blocks had adopted the technology of polymer flooding, the affusion can be decreased by 500 million m3 with the water produced decreasing by 3 billion m3. The tertiary oil recovery technology has become the dominant technology for the sustainable development of Daqing Oilfield.

The tertiary oil recovery technology is to adopt physical, chemical and biological methods to take out the residual oil that cannot be exploited with the water flooding technology as much as possible, so as to improve the recovery ratio of crude oil. It consists of such typical methods as the polymer-flooding technology and the ASP-Flooding technology etc.

Since the 1960s, Daqing Oilfield began to develop, reserve and apply the tertiary oil recovery technology independently; and after 40 year's hard work and laborious exploration of the research personnel, there have shaped up a series of increasingly mature technologies of oil extraction.

The development of Daqing Oilfield's tertiary oil recovery technology experienced four important leaps: from trials in the lab to the polymer flooding pilot mine trials, industrial mine trials, and large scale industrial application and then the ASP-Flooding Industrial Trials. More importantly, a new model of independent innovation, that is, to drive technology innovations with the demands of the oilfield itself while promoting technology innovation through fundamental researches, has been created with the application of the tertiary oil recovery technology.

During the process of applying the achievements in developing the tertiary oil recovery technology to production, Wang Yupu, General Manager of Daqing Oilfield Company Limited, took the lead and coordinated many project teams from various research institutes as well as many experts and researchers from the oil extraction factory and the mid scale experiment factory to solve the difficulties jointly and promote technology innovations. More than 3000 technical personnel took part in the over 5600 repeated experiments and improvements of the tertiary oil recovery technology.

At present, driven by the tertiary oil recovery technology, the recovery ratio of Daqing Oilfield's main oil layer has broken through 50 percent, which is 15 percent higher than that of oil fields of the same category at home and abroad, and the tertiary oil recovery technology takes the lead in the world.

Daqing Oilfield is striving for a higher goal: it will spend 15 to 20 years developing a series of fully developed tertiary oil recovery technology and quaternary oil recovery technology led by chemical flooding while making the coverage ratio of the tertiary oil recovery technology to 80 percent in the local area, getting the recovery ratio of main oil layer reach 70 percent, and having the annual oil output with the tertiary oil recovery technology adopted maintained at the level of over 10 million tons by the year of 2020.

Wang Yupu, General Manager of Daqing Oilfield Company Limited, said confidently, "100 million tons marks that the tertiary oil recovery technology of Daqing Oilfield has become a well-known brand of 'Made in China'. It means that Daqing Oilfield has realized a historic conversion from physical oil extraction to chemical oil extraction, and it plays a decisive role in the relay of maintaining the oil output of Daqing Oilfield."
