Rapid growth of auto sector boosts talent demands

"In the past few years, China's automotive industry has been developing fast by keeping a growth rate of over 20 percent and consequently brought many challenges into fields like energy, environment and security. Only technological innovation can address these problems while the source of innovation is talented personnel." The subject lecture launched by Zhang Xiaoyu, chairman of The Society of Automotive Engineers of China on the 4th China (Huadu) Automotive Forum held recently forwarded the subject of this forum, that is, "Auto. Talents", and also put forth an important matter that influences the sustainable development of the automotive industry in China.

The rapid development of the automotive industry in China is known to the whole world. At the same time of this rapid development period, talented personnel demand bloomed splendidly. Strategic Research on Personnel Development in Automotive Industry in China shows, there will be 3,568.7 thousand employees in China's automotive industry; this figure will reach over 5 million in 2015 and even 7.7623 million in 2020, with an average annual increasing rate of 10 percent.

The boom in personnel demand in automotive industry reflects clearly the urgency of personnel training in China. Take the holder of this forum, Huadu in Guangzhou, as an example. Now there are over 30 thousand automotive personnel in Huadu, among which there are 14,680 professional technicians who major in manufacturing and about 550 personnel who deal with R&D in this industry. It is predicted that in the next five years the automotive industry in Huadu will need over 60 thousand talented personnel.

Compared with the deficiency in quantity, the irrational personnel structure in China's automotive industry draws more attention. There is a lack of not only the comprehensive operating management talents who are professional in both technology and management, but also the versatile technological manpower whose knowledge structure will cover such fields as manufacturing, electronics and computer.

"At the moment, China's automotive industry is expanding its scale in a fast speed. Each sector in the industrial chain needs urgently talented persons at different levels, including R&D doctors sitting in front of computers, as well as technological workers working on the assembly line. Automotive personnel in China are meeting with structural contradiction. Now about 1.8 million people are employed in automotive manufacturing industry, however, only 0.7million of them can be entitled as "talents"." Zhang Xiaoyu said, "There is a deficiency of both top-level talents in designing sector and technicians on the production line."

"Compared with application-oriented talents, the demand for research-oriented talents is more urgent in China." Zhao Hang, the director of China Automotive Technology & Research Center, believes that the equipment level, factory scale and product quality in China's automotive industry are growing steadily, but the independent R&D capability still need to be improved. Judging by the individual company, the research and development in some areas has got some periodical achievements. However it is not perfect yet concerning the whole R&D system. Especially on the key technology level, there is still some inadequacy in research and development. Talent deficiency is one of the main reasons that caused this situation.

In the situation of automotive talent deficiency, where can these talents be obtained?

In recent years, with the rapid development of the automotive industry in China, more and more "overseas returns" are attracted into domestic automotive companies. Compared with material conditions, they focus more on their development after returning back to homeland, and are eager to participate in large projects of the company and to display their strong points in the development process of automotive industry in China. So it provides more choices for the automotive companies who are in a desire for automotive talents.

Talent introduction becomes a convenient way for the industry to tackle talent problem. Zhang Xiaoyu advised that the "overseas returns" and domestic automotive companies should adapt to each other. Foreign large automotive enterprises have a fine classification in operating posts and complete fundamental equipment. Having worked in such institutions for years, these "overseas returns", when taking important post in domestic companies, will find it hard to start if they just copy the management mechanism in foreign companies, because most domestic companies start from the very beginning and managers have to care about every aspect, even the establishment of basis statistics. This is one important reason why some "overseas returns" can not feel accustomed. Therefore, "overseas returns" need to learn more about what domestic companies need.

Zhang Xiaoyu believes that talents in China's automotive industry mainly come from home. "Overseas returns" also need the domestic working experience so as to make theories into practice. Zhao Quanfu, the president of Zhejiang Automotive Engineering Institute, who has 18-year working experience abroad said, the introduction of foreign talents and the employment of domestic personnel should be combined together. Only by the way of basing on their own talents can the talent troops be enlarged and strengthened.

Yu Zhuoping, the president of Automotive Institute of Tongji University, said that universities and companies must cooperate more closely. For universities, it is more important to set a good basis for the automotive personnel training and meet the development requirements of modern automotive industry. The personnel-training is the responsibility of both the universities and the whole society. He said it was beneficial for companies to take part in the personnel training. It will shorten the adaptation time of students from school to company if the company could provide the chance of fieldwork practice; it will also save largely the personnel resource for the company.
