China's digital publishing coming of age

In 2009, the total output value of the digital publishing industry in China reached RMB79.5 billion yuan, exceeding that of the traditional publications for the first time. Experts estimated that, the total output value of the digital publishing industry in 2010 would be over RMB100 billion yuan.

The rapid popularization of digital and network technology has brought along the fast development of the digital publishing industry. "The statistics in the past five years show that the annual growth rate of the digital publishing industry in China is nearly 50 percent." Zhang Yijun, Director of the Scientific and Digital Publishing Department of the General Administration of Press and Publication (GAPP), expressed that currently the conformation of the digital publishing industry in China was forming gradually---the increasingly integrated industrial chain, intensified industrial syncretization and expanded industrial scale.

Hao Zhensheng, Director of China Institute of Publishing Science (CIPS), believes that it has gradually become a mainstream to develop and utilize the publishing contents and forms of audio, video, picture and essay publications completely and deeply, by taking the wired network and mobile web as the platform.

Relevant research institution estimates that in 2010 there might be startling growth in the e-book market in mainland China. The sales volume is estimated to be about 3 million sets, the shipment volume will occupy about 30 percent of the whole global market, and the sales amount may reach RMB6 billion yuan.

At present, there are about 80 enterprises in the world manufacturing or planning to develop e-book readers with independent IP rights, among which there are over 40 Chinese enterprises. In addition to the hardware producers such as Hanvon, Hanlin, Eboshi and Newsmy, the traditional publishers like China Publishing Group and Shanghai Century Publishing Group have also brought out products with their own features.

In 2009, the new digital publishing model initiated by Hanvon E-book was widely accepted by the traditional publishing circle as well. From the viewpoint of content providers, the biggest problem is the copyright protection of digital publishing technology and content resources. The principle "Free Processing" forwarded by Hanvon Technology can guarantee that the content providers will not encounter any difficulty regarding the technique. And the principle "Encryption for Each Book" will ensure that any materials provided by the content providers to Hanvon can only be downloaded and read by Hanvon E-book, and the complete and true download sales data can be given to the content providers.

In the field of newspapers and periodicals, Hanvon has integrated more preponderant resources into the platform of Hanvon e-book mall. Tens of newspaper publishers including Jinghua Times and Global Times have made a strategic cooperation agreement with Hanvon, according to which, through the manner of either free of charge or collecting charges in advance, e-newspaper is provided for reading and downloading. As for the consumers using Hanvon E-book with the wireless downloadable function, they just need to open their e-book every morning and make a click, the newspaper of that day will be downloaded onto their own reader. They can just read at any time as they like.

Customer's cooperation in R&D promotes innovation in management software

Reported by Chen Jing, reporter of this newspaper: The Inspur Group recently released a new generation of business management software - Inspur GS5.2. Wang Xingshan, Senior Vice President of the Inspur Group, said that the cooperation of customers in R&D was one of the main drives in the self-innovation of Inspur.

It is introduced that GS5.2 is an industry solution as well as an IT service solution, which is designed and developed completely based on Inspur's GSP platform, by integrating with the cutting-edge technology of virtualization and Cloud Computing. GS5.2 is developed on the basis of syncretizing the advanced management models of group enterprises in China. It is a thorough application of the SOA frame (Service-Oriented Architecture).

Wang Xingshan expressed that in recent years, the Inspur GS products kept an annual growth rate of over 40 percent, especially owing to the demand of strategic customers on high quality. The innovation capability of management software makers, to a great extent, depends on customers they are serving. The demand on high quality from the high-end customers is the origin of motivity for innovation. The high-end customers are taken as the engine for domestic management software makers to upgrade their products and services.

The local management software makers, starting at a later stage, are making great efforts to catch up with the cross-national enterprises and to become the leader in the market. The latest statistics from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology show that in 2010, the management software market scale in China will reach RMB34 billion yuan, among which the management software of domestic self-owned brands will occupy a market share of 78 percent.

Regarding this, Wang Xingshan said that the steady and rapid development of the national economy in China provided opportunities for the breakthrough in high-end of the domestic management software. At the same time, the appearance of such new technologies, new concepts and new application models as Cloud Computing, SaaS (Software as a Service), SOA and Internet of Things further accelerated the reform in IT industry. The software and service industry in China is meeting a significant chance for development.


Currently, there are five characteristics in the development of domestic management software. Firstly, new technologies, new concepts and new application models provide motives for continuing innovation for the development of management software. Secondly, the demand on high quality from the high-end customers is the motivity of innovation in management software industry. Starting from group control to deep application, domestic management software has gained a collective breakthrough in the high-end market: not only controlled the strategic commanding point, but also inspired the whole nation. Thirdly, industrialization is not only a methodology to meet customers' demand on deep application, but also a way for software service providers to acquire the differentiation competence. Fourthly, the trend of serving based on software products is commonly accepted by the circle, and the value of services also gets identified by the customers. Fifthly, the application integration, the total involvement and cooperation of the industrial chain, with integration and cooperation as the objective, not only is the trend in development of management software, but also actualize the possibility of syncretization and innovation.
