With the increasing requirements of people for riding a car, the unique advantages of textiles in automotive interior trim, sound insulation and noise reduction are gradually emerging. From cockpit filter, seat cover, trunk inside lining, deadening to carpet, nonwoven fabrics is playing a more and more important role in automobile market.
In terms of the function, textile has the such characteristics as heat insulation, sound-absorbing, de-slick, high intensity, stable dimension, strong color fastness, good wearing resistance, inflaming retardance, water uptake, ageing resistance and static proof; and in terms of the decoration, besides such performances as beauty, comfort, ventilation and antifouling, it is also a kind of economical and practical material. For an automobile, about 25 kg textiles may be used for more than eighty parts. With the rapid development of automobile industry, automobile textiles industry gets huge development space.
It is known that the demand of automotive textiles in domestic market is about 62.5 million square meters annually, however, only about 50 percent of them can be met by domestic production capacity; the demand of automobile carpet is 12 million square meters annually, but only about 10 percent of them can be provided at home. Therefore, there are automotive textiles valued about US$4 billion needing to be imported every year.

The automobile industry in China has witnessed a rapid development, but compared with the foreign counterpart, there is a big disparity in automobile textile industry. Thanks to the particularity of automobile decoration materials, auto decoration material manufacturers are required to have advantages in technologies, equipments and scale, as well as close cooperation with auto part & fitting manufacturers and automobile manufacturers to design, research and develop together in order to produce products of meeting the market demand.
Currently, most of China's automotive textile enterprises are transformed from factories that produce industrial cloth, composite materials and coating materials, thus they are lack in brand marketing experience. Meanwhile, there are lacks of whole set of production equipments as well as professional factories or equipments for the pre-processing and post-processing of automotive fabrics, therefore, the quality of final products are difficult to be ensured. In addition, there is a lack of professional staff, which results in a universal weakness in the capability of independent development. Generally, compared with international level, a certain disparity still exists because of the shortage of leading enterprises in the sector of automobile textiles, as well as self-owned brands.
At the same time, an increasing number of overseas automobile brands are coming into China's market attracted by the great market potential thereof. When these vehicle brands made their products produced in China, their existing accessory manufacturers also entered China's market at their heels and directly provided parts for them. For this reason, it is difficult for China's domestic automobile accessory manufacturers to have a finger in the pie. Otherwise, even though some of them are fortunately enough to be listed on the accessory provider directory of those foreign auto brands, most of them may also be ejected from the game circle due to expensive testing charge produced at the stage of vehicle testing on accessories. It seems that there is a certain technology barrier problem behind the phenomenon; however, it is true that there is a bigger gap between China's home-made vehicle textiles and the foreign counterparts in terms of the quality and design concept as well as other aspects.
The Plan on Adjusting and Revitalizing the Textile Industry, which is issued by the State Council, has made it a key point to develop textiles and fabrics used in automobile industry and other domains. In the plan, it is advanced that the key issues shall be focused on and key links shall be highlighted. Especially for those key enterprises, they should do something in research and development of products. Besides, what also should be done is to depend on leading enterprises in domestic automobile textile industry, establish China's own product development engineering center, formulate China's industrial standard for automotive textiles, enhance the research and development efforts, and build Chinese self-owned brands of automotive fabrics in order to make China's automobile textiles have the right of speech in the international automobile part field.
For an automobile textile enterprise, it shall firstly to level off those tiny factors that will cause apparent changes to the quality of products during the process of production, reduce the difference in the quality of products caused by human factors, and utilize automated production systems as much as possible and make them optimized and upgraded constantly. Secondly, it shall usually learn foreign new design concept and train of thought in design and closely follow the trend of the times. Moreover, besides demands of function and decoration in the future, environmental protection is also a matter that has to be faced in the development of automobile textiles. It is also a problem for Chinese manufacturers to research and develop recyclable environmentally friendly products since European Union vehicle industry has begun to recycle all discarded autos for dismantling, recycling and processing from 2006.
Presently, although a large part of automobile textiles in China need to be imported, with the technology and other difficult problems being resolved gradually and the industrial standard being formulated and perfected, we believe that China's automobile textiles must be able to meet domestic demand and go into the international high-end market.
