If there is a need to be careful about your hair in summer, it is just as much the case in winter too.
As the seasons change, so does the amount of moisture in the air. The combination of dry indoor heating and the dry cold weather outside can wreak havoc on skin as it loses moisture, and that includes the scalp.
"A lot of times when we think about our hair we tend to overlook one of the most important parts - our scalp," said Patrick Canivet, Asia technical director for L'Oreal Professional Products Division.
The Frenchman said a dry scalp was a common issue that many people faced, especially in the colder climates where they are moving in and out of heated areas frequently.
The scalp becomes tight and itchy and tiny flakes of dead skin are dislodged through combing and brushing.
"A disorganized scalp means it is difficult for the hair to have a healthy glow," Canivet said. "Also, the probability of having dandruff is higher in winter because our body is weaker and has a problem in fighting against the excessive micro-organisms."
This is why it is so important to be extra careful in hair care at this time of year. Keeping your scalp healthy is the first step to getting shiny, beautiful hair. The scalp is more sensitive in winter and needs great attention.
Canivet emphasized the use of soft shampoos, such as Kerastase Bain Vital Haute Tolerance or Bain Riche Haute Tolerance. Noctocalm is also recommended to apply at night three times a week; this soothes, calms and moisturizes the scalp and makes it healthier. He said it was also important to make sure you rinse out all the shampoo and conditioner thoroughly.
"In the winter, you also need to watch out for friction and physical hair-shaft injury that is caused by hard combing and brushing."
The combination of dry air and static hair also makes it difficult to comb and move. Frequent injury to the hair shaft disrupts the outer layer and allows the inner layer to splay, making the hair difficult to manage.
"Physical damage like friction is more obvious in the winter so making the surface smooth and controlled is important," Canivet said.
In such cases, it is useful to use a surface conditioner which takes off the static electricity and makes combing more easily. The Kerastase Oleo-Relax series is recommended to treat hair, especially in the dry season. The products use the combination of shorea and palm oils, with nourishing properties to discipline dry, frizzy and unmanageable hair.
After applying the Oleo-Relax Masque for five minutes, Oleo-Relax Nutri Huile or Oleo-Relax Nutri-Elixir is also needed for complete control over frizzy hair from the roots to ends.
Canivet added that winter is the best time to color and perm hair. "Enemies of the hair are the sun and water. When the weather is dry, a perm and color last longer." |
