Polish Agriculture minister Marek Sawicki said Monday the situation on turkey farms in central Poland, where the bird flu virus had been detected last week, was "stable."

On Saturday, the H5N1 virus was detected in two turkey farms near Plock, some 100 kilometers northwest of Poland's capital of Warsaw.

The agriculture minister said on Polish Radio One there was no threat to people's lives and health anymore.

He also ensured that the affected farmers would receive appropriate damages for the birds that had to be slaughtered as a result of the flu outbreak.

Marek Sawicki reminded that some other European Union (EU) states, including Germany, Romania, the Czech Republic and Britain, had also faced the same problem in the past, but their respective poultry markets managed to survive.

He said he was hopeful the Polish market would follow suit.

Meanwhile, the European Commission has banned the export of poultry from five Polish counties, Poland's deputy chief vet Krzysztof Jazdzewski has confirmed on Monday.

Binding European Union principles ban the import of meat from a3-km danger zone and 10-km threat zone around the outbreak site, but no EU member states may ban imports from an entire member state.
