23-year-old Philipino crowned as Miss ASEAN

Twenty-three-year-old Philippine girl Jhezarie Javier here Saturday night won the audience and the jury by fluent English, elegant behavior and nice figure to become Miss ASEAN 2005.

"May the ASEAN countries join hands for a better future!" said Jhezarie while answering a question from the anchor. Handclapping erupted for the 175-cm girl, who will then become the Goodwill Ambassador for the ASEAN to promote the potential of human and natural resources in the region and help upgrade tourism and trade development for ASEAN countries.

Jhezarie, herself an orphan since four years old, has been working with a charity in her motherland to help orphans and children from indigent families to start over with renewed hope.

Before Jhezarie was hailed for her victory, 22-year-old Imelda Fransisca from Indonesia and 23-year-old Panisa Chaikanarakkil from Thailand separately became the first and second runner-ups.

Jhezarie, Imelda and Panisa also won the titles of Miss Natural Beauty, Miss Favorite and Miss Congeniality. Twenty-one-year-old Ei Yupa Win from Myanmar won the title of Miss Talent.

Altogether eight girls took part in the contest. The others were from Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Singapore. Laos and Cambodia did not participate in the first ever beauty pageant of the 10-nation organization.

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Business Advisory Council under the ASEAN worked together to bring about the competition to promote business development in each country to enhance the integration of the ASEAN economy.

"There are many ways to create friendship and cooperation among different countries, through politics, trade and culture. The Miss ASEAN 2005 Pageant is one way to do it," said the organization.
