A seminar on mythical wildmen was held Wednesday in Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The seminar with the theme "Following the trace of Human's cousin-Wild Man" has again stirred up a heated discussion on Wild Man. Is it merely a legend or a real and live existence?

Yuan Guoying, a researcher for the Xinjiang Environmental Protection Institute in northwestern China says that there are at least 200 to 500 "wildmen" living in remote areas of the country.

"At least seven to eight different species of wildman exist and live in Xinjiang," Yuan said, describing them as being big and tall with long red or brown hair. "They have all appeared in some remote areas in the mountains," Yuan said.

The professor was speaking at a seminar to introduce his new book The Wild Man on July 24. Yuan has been a well-known researcher on the subject of mythical feral hominids for more than 40 years.

Yuan also presented a map for where wildmen may live in China and in the rest of the world. In addition to the vast deserts and mountain ranges of Xinjiang, he said Tibet - the home of the mythical Yeti - is also an area where wild humanoids have been encountered.

The researcher speculated that these wildmen may have been everywhere but have withdrawn to remote areas as modern humans gradually took over their territory.

"We have lots of 'witnesses' who claim to have encountered wildmen but researchers have never really met them in person," Yuan said. "But we did discover some footprints and hair which were alleged to belong to them."

People's Daily noted that the existence of other living species of hominid has never been confirmed as their bodies have never been discovered.

Yuan insisted however that wildmen are more than just a myth. "If they do not exist, how come we have some many witnesses and stories about them?" Yuan said, adding that he is determined to continue his research into the subject.
