Two sections of new Yangtze River bridge conjoined

The two sections of Runyang Bridge built from the two banks of the Yangtze River in east China's Jiangsu Province were conjoined Saturday, which connects the cities of Zhenjiang and Yangzhou.

The bridge composed of north section and south section with thefull length of 35.66 kilometers. The construction of is the largest in scale and the most advanced in technique among all Yangtze River bridges, according to the construction headquarters.

The construction began in October of 2000 with a total investment of 5.78 billion yuan (696 million US dollars). A total of 4 billion yuan (482 million US dollars) has been spent so far.

The north section completed construction in January of 2003. The ongoing south section is 1,490 meters in length and weighs 23,000 tons.

The entire bridge is expected to open to traffic in the first half year of 2005, sources disclosed.
