Prior to his visit to the US, President Xi Jinping made an official visit to Latin America and the Caribbean. Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Xi's visit there was a success.

Wang also said the visit enhanced mutual trust, and promoted concrete cooperation in the region. Wang added the visit strengthened coordination, maintaining the interests of developing countries in the international community.

The Chinese Foreign Minister said the visit was a significant move to open up an overall diplomatic strategy under the new leadership. He said China is willing to deepen relations with all developing countries, and it will forever remain a good partner of developing countries.

From May 31 to June 6, President Xi Jinping paid state visits to Trinidad and Tobago, Costa Rica and Mexico. He also met with leaders from several Caribbean countries in Trinidad and Tobago’s capital Port of Spain. In a speech given at the Mexican Senate on Wednesday, Xi called for concerted efforts to beef up relations between China and Latin America.
