Chinese Vice President Li Yuanchao met with former Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mahathir Bin Mohamad on Monday.

During their meeting in the Great Hall of the People in downtown Beijing, Li told Mahathir that the China-ASEAN (10+1) mechanism established due to Mahathir's wisdom and foresight has contributed greatly to cooperation between the two sides.

It is China's unswerving policy to enhance good-neighborly relations and mutually beneficial cooperation with countries of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), said Li.

He said China is ready to build a more intimate community of shared destiny together with ASEAN countries, and jointly contribute to the construction of the modern maritime Silk Road so as to open a new chapter in the China-ASEAN strategic partnership.

Mahathir said Malaysia attaches great importance to exchanges and cooperation between China and Malaysia in areas such as the economy, culture and tourism, adding that Malaysia is willing to forge ahead in its relations with China and promote cooperation between the ASEAN and China.

The 89-year-old Mahathir was here at the invitation of the Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs.

This year also marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Malaysia.
