Symposium commemorates Xi Zhongxun's work on religious affairs

A symposium was held on Thursday to celebrate the work on religious affairs by Xi Zhongxun, former vice premier and father of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Organized by the United Front Work Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and the State Administration for Religious Affairs, the symposium focused on Xi Zhongxun's achievements as well as his thoughts, methods and political wisdom of settling questions of religious affairs.

He was praised as a great Communist fighter, an outstanding proletarian revolutionary, a distinguished political leader of the Party and military and an excellent leader and model of the work of the united front and religious affairs.

Xi Zhongxun died aged 89 in 2002. He served as China's vice premier between 1959 and 1965 and vice chairman of the 5th and 7th National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee.

On Tuesday, President Xi attended a symposium in Beijing to mark the 100th birthday of Xi Zhongxun.

Participants in the meeting reviewed Xi Zhongxun's revolutionary career and his achievements, calling on others to follow his noble characteristics, revolutionary spirit and fine style.

Tuesday's seminar, presided over by Vice Premier Liu Yandong, was also attended by top legislator Zhang Dejiang, some retired leaders, senior officials as well as Xi Zhongxun's relatives and friends.
