Zambian 1st president's handkerchief to be auctioned
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2004-10-07 17:03
In every occasion, Zambia's first president Kenneth Kaunda always brings a white handkerchief with him.

When asked about the meaning of that white handkerchief, he said it symbolizes love and peace.

"I started carrying the white handkerchief whilst in prison during the struggle for independence when I and my freedom fighters were arrested by the British colonial authorities," he said.

"I have had it since 1960," he said.

According to the local media Wednesday, Kaunda's traditional white handkerchief will be auctioned on the 40th Independence Day which falls on October 24.

Kaunda was quoted as saying he had consented to a request from Zambians to have his handkerchief auctioned.

"It's a request from the public and I gladly said yes as it hasspecial meaning to my humble heart," he said.

Kaunda's handkerchief would be auctioned at the launch of his music album with Denmark-based Zambian musician Rikki Ililonga.
