Zambian girls being lured into "sex slavery" in South Africa

A senior Zambian government official has warned parents in the southern African country to keep an eye on their daughters to prevent them from being lured to work as "sex slaves" in South Africa, Zambia Daily Mail reported on Monday.

Zambian High Commissioner to South Africa Leslie Mbula said in a statement to Daily Mail on Sunday that Zambian girls as young as 15 years old were being smuggled into South Africa by truck drivers. The girls ended up working as "sex slaves".

He said a few lucky ones have managed to escape from "their bosses" and reported themselves at his office in South Africa, adding that there has been an increased in the number of Zambian girls getting stranded in that country because they have no passports and no means of sustaining themselves.

The Zambian ambassador said the girls forced into the sex trade are at risk of contracting HIV/AIDS or being killed, adding that parents could put a stop to such unnecessary risks if they kept track of their daughters' whereabouts.

He has since appealed for the registration of all Zambians living in South Africa so that his office could have a proper record, adding that his office does not have such proper records because many of them were not registered.
