Moroccan king appoints new govt
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-01-03 23:57

Morocco's King Mohammed VI appointed a new cabinet led by moderate Islamist Prime Minister Abdelilah Benkirane on Tuesday, the official MAP news agency reported.

In the Royal Palace in Morocco's capital Rabat, the king appointed 31 members of the new cabinet, including prime minister, state minister and other ministerial posts.

King Mohammed VI named Justice and Development Party (PJD) leader Benkirane as the new prime minister on Nov. 29, 2011, after the moderate Islamist party won the parliamentary election with 107 seats in the 395-seat legislature, gaining the right to lead the country's next government.

With 107 seats, the PJD could not control the parliament alone, and therefore needed to form a coalition with other parties, including the Istiqlal party (Independence Party) which came second in the November election with 60 seats.

Morocco held the parliamentary election on Nov. 25, 2011, less than five months after a July 1 referendum on a new constitution, which was proposed by King Mohammed VI in an attempt to appease anti-government protests in the country.

According to the new constitution, the king should appoint the prime minister from the party winning most seats in the parliament. The prime minister is empowered to dissolve the parliament and appoint or dismiss senior officials, powers that were restricted to the king before the referendum.

However, the new constitution retains the king as head of the army, religious authorities and the judiciary, which was rejected by some youths-led opposition groups.
