Egypt has reopened its border terminal with the Gaza Strip on Saturday after keeping it closed for seven weeks.

The Interior Ministry of Gaza-ruling Hamas said on its website that Egypt partly opened the Rafah crossing, Gaza's only window to the outside world, in both directions for three days.

However, travel is limited to medical patients, holders of foreign passports and students who have previously coordinated with the ministry, it said.

According to the interior ministry, up to 10,000 Palestinians have applied to exit through Rafah, but only 150 to 300 people can leave Gaza each day the crossing is operating.

Since it blocked the terminal almost two months ago, Egypt has partly reopened the crossing three times to allow the travel of Palestinian pilgrims.

Relations between Hamas and the new military-backed government of Egypt worsened to unprecedented levels after the ouster of Islamist Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi, a Hamas patron, last July.

Hamas has showed sympathy with Morsi and rejected what it described as a military coup.

Since toppling Morsi, Egypt has partly reopened the Rafah crossing on humanitarian basis, allowing the entry of only medical patients, students in foreign countries and holder of foreign visas and passports.
