France not to reinforce military presence in Cote d'Ivoire
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2004-06-11 10:28
The number of French troops in Cote d'Ivoire is "adequate" and France has no plan to make any immediate change, the French Defense Ministry said Thursday.

"There is no change in our deployment due to current tensions (in Cote d'Ivoire)," Jean-Francois Bureau, spokesman for the defense ministry, said at a news conference.

A group of unidentified gunmen attacked French and Cote d'Ivoire military posts in Gohitafla in central Cote d'Ivoire along the confidence zone dividing the rebel-held north from the government-run south, leaving two French soldiers wounded.

Some 4,000 French troops have been stationed in Cote d'Ivoire since last year helping to steer the West African country toward reconciliation after a failed coup bid in September 2002 against President Laurent Gbagbo.
