Extradition of 3 Uruguayan military officers to Chile approved
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2004-09-09 14:19
Uruguayan prosecutor Luis Bajac announced here Wednesday that the extradition to Chile of three Uruguayan military officers involved in the killing of Chilean biologist Eugenio Berrios was approved.

The three retired generals, Tomas Casella, Eduardo Radaelli and Wellington Sarli, have been wanted by the Chilean justice for allegedly having associated with the assassination of Berrios.

Bajac told the press the extradition request by the Chilean justice meets the requirements of a treaty signed in 1897 between the two countries.

Previously, Judge Gustavo Mirabal ordered the closing of the borders for the three retired military officers and the payment of a bail to make sure they would not leave Uruguay.

Berrios left Chile in 1991 escorted by members of the Chilean army and settled down in Uruguay, presumedly to avoid a legal process in relation to the murder of former Chilean Foreign Minister Orlando Letelier.

In 1992, Berrios escaped the Uruguayan military men, who escorted him and said he was kidnapped at the police station of Parque del Plata.

In April 1995 the body of Berrios was found on the El Pinar beach, 20 km east of Montevideo.
