Peruvian President Ollanta Humala rejected on Friday a request to pardon jailed former president Alberto Fujimori, Justice Minister Daniel Figallo announced here.

Figallo said Humala had decided to accept a presidential commission's recommendation to not issue a pardon to Fujimori on humanitarian grounds.

Fujimori, who ruled Peru from 1990 to 2000, has been seeking a pardon on humanitarian grounds since October as he claimed he suffers from cancer of the tongue and other ailments.

The justice minister said "Fujimori does not have a terminal illness, neither does he have a serious, incurable degenerative illness."

Fujimori was convicted in 2009 of authorizing a government- backed death squad to kill 25 people in the course of Peru's war against the Shining Path rebel group and is serving a 25-year prison sentence.
