Chris Christie, a possible Republican contender to run for the 2016 presidential election, was re-elected as the governor of the U.S. State of New Jersey in a landslide victory on Tuesday.
"Thank you, New Jersey, for making me the luckiest guy in the world," Christie told his supporters in a victory speech late Tuesday night.
The Republican incumbent, who has been projected as an apparent winner by local media, defeated the little-known state Senator Barbara Buono by 60 percent to 39 percent, according to polls counted in the first precincts.
Christie also highlighted his successful leadership in "a big, big win" in Tuesday's election by challenging a deeply divided Washington that has been gridlocked in recent government shutdown and budget crisis.
"If we can do this in Trenton, New Jersey, maybe the folks in Washington D.C. should tune in their TV's right now," he said.
Christie's overwhelming win will become his bonus on the list of Republicans' top runners for presidential election in 2016.
On the same day, Democrat Terry McAuliffe narrowly defeated Republican Ken Cuccinelli to become Virginia's next governor. Democrat Bill de Blasio was elected New York City's mayor to succeed Michael Bloomberg who has been in office for 12 years.
