Former first lady Barbara Bush has been hospitalized in Houston with a "respiratory-related issue," her husband's office said Tuesday night.

Mrs. Bush, 88, was sent to Houston Methodist Hospital on Monday for treatment of early signs of a respiratory-related issue, the statement from the office of former President George H.W. Bush said.

"She is in great spirits, has already received visits from her husband and family, and is receiving fantastic care," the statement said. "Updates will be issued when warranted."

Bush had been admitted to the same hospital in 2008 for treatment of a perforated ulcer, returning in 2010 for routine testing, according to U.S. media reports.

Mrs. Bush is the wife of George H.W. Bush, the 41st U.S. president, and mother of George W. Bush, the 43rd. She is one of only two women to be both the wife and mother of U.S. presidents. The other is Abigail Adams, wife of John Adams, the second U.S. president, and mother of John Quincy Adams, the sixth president.

Bush supported the cause of universal literacy and founded the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy as the first lady. Since leaving the White House, she has continued to advance this cause.
