The friendship between Iran and the United States can be rebuilt if both sides make efforts and respect each other, said Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Wednesday night.

"Animosity is not eternal, friendship is not eternal. So we should transform animosity into friedship," said Rouhani in an interview with Swiss RTS television in Davos, after arriving here to attend the ongoing World Economic Forum.

When asked whether it would be possible to reopen the U.S. embassy in Tehran, Rouhani replied: "the past was difficult, but nothing is impossible."

"Iranian people's rights should be respected. If the actions from America were positive, our replies would be positive," said the president, adding that with mutual respect and efforts from both sides, objectives could be reached.

"We should all think positively about the future, even if this road is difficult," he said.

Rouhani is scheduled to give a speech at the Forum on Thursday at a session named "Iran in the World." U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is scheduled to address here one day later. Rouhani said he had no plan to meet Kerry.

Regarding the ongoing Syrian peace negotiations in Montreux, Switzerland, the Iranian president said he wished "all efforts to go in direction of the will of Syrian people," and the first step was to stop bloodshed.

"The Syrian questions could only be decided by its people, nobody could be the judge of the future of this country," he said.
