Four people were killed and three others critically injured after a car collided with a fully packed taxi in the U.S. state of Texas Saturday, local media reported.

The deadly crash happened early Saturday morning in Pasadena, about 20 km from downtown Houston, local TV ABC13 reported.

Police said a black Mazda Miata apparently went too fast around a curve and lost control. It crossed yellow solid lines, drifted into oncoming traffic from the other direction, and slammed into the taxi.

Police said two people in the Mazda died along with two passengers in the backseat of the taxi minivan. The taxi driver and two other passenger were airlifted to a hospital with critical injuries, according to the report.

Pasadena police spokesman Vance Mitchell told the media that the impact of the collision sounded like an "explosion" to an officer who happened to be near the scene.

He said there was no actual fire but described the accident scene as "horrendous."

Authorities have not yet released names or ages of the victims, but they said alcohol is believed to be a factor behind the accident.
