Most flood-hit primary schools in Bangladesh reopened

With the recession of flood waters out of 17,066 flood affected primary schools 11,836 have already been reopened and students started returning to their educational life gradually.

A total of 9.2 million books have been kept for distribution among the flood hit 4.5 million primary students and the teachers were asked to take extra classes to make up the classes lost due to flood, according to The New Nation Monday.

Jahanara Begum, advisor to the prime minister on primary and mass education affairs, was quoted as saying that out of a total 73,540 primary schools in the country, 17,066 were affected by floods.

River erosion destroyed 60 primary schools buildings throughoutthe country, she said, adding that the floods also affected seven primary training institutes and five district primary education offices.

Total loss in primary education sector will be around 2,000 million taka (33 million US dollars).

Jahanara said 200 million taka (3.3 million dollars) well be spent for emergency repair of the primary schools so that normal educational life can be resumed as early as possible.
