Malaysia has retrenched 30,111 construction workers due to the economic downturn, a local official said on Sunday.
Of these workers, 22,583 were Malaysians while the rest were foreigners, Malaysian Deputy Human Resource Minister Maznah Mazlan said after a dialogue meeting with plantation managers in Kota Baharu, capital of the Kelantan State.
Malaysian national news services Bernama quoted Maznah as saying that 11,144 have found new jobs while the others have been sent for retraining for jobs in other sectors.
The ministry and construction companies had since created 36,358 job opportunities in various sectors, she added. |
