S. Korea proposes inter-Korean Red Cross talks over family reunions
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-02-14 10:32

South Korea proposed on Tuesday Red Cross talks with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) over holding reunions for families separated by the 1950-53 Korean War, local media reported.

The head of South Korea's Red Cross, Yu Jung-keun, suggested holding talks on Feb. 20 in the DPRK border town of Kaesong or the South Korean border city of Munsan, according to the Yonhap News Agency.

The proposal comes after the unification ministry in Seoul, which oversees tense cross-border relations, said it will make more efforts to hold regular reunions for families torn asunder by the civil conflict that ended with a truce.

Last held in 2010, government-arranged reunions were put on hold after the two Koreas clashed over the issue of repatriation of DPRK defectors last year.

More than 78,000 people here are awaiting a rare chance for rendezvous, some 80 percent of them 70 years old or older.
