S. Korea to bolster port security ahead of nuclear security summit
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-02-27 16:46

South Korea will step up security at local ports and on international ships entering the ports ahead of the Nuclear Security Summit in Seoul next month, the government said Monday.

The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs said security levels for port facilities and ships will be raised from level 1, which is the current security level, to level 3 at which access restrictions and security inspections will be strengthened to the maximum extent.

The ministry added that tougher onboard inspections will be conducted on foreign ships that visit South Korean trade ports starting Monday.

The ministry said the heightened security measures aim to ensure the country's safe hosting of the large-scale global nuclear security meeting.

The March 26-27 summit is expected to bring top leaders from 53 nations and four international organizations to Seoul, including U. S. President Barack Obama, Chinese President Hu Jintao and U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
