Indian Army chief blames rogue elements for coup fears
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-04-08 15:34

Indian Army chief General V.K. Singh has blamed the "rogue elements" in the bureaucracy for the rift between him and the government, terming the media report of coup fears were "absurd and deplorable".

"It is the rogue elements of the bureaucracy who want to blow things up. The Army is the upholder of the country's values. Those who think differently about the Army need their heads examined and are the biggest anti-nationals," he told local newspaper The Hindu published on Saturday.

"There is nothing wrong. I am on same page as the government. We enjoy good relations, and I have no differences with the ( Defence Minister AK Antony)," General Singh said.

The Army chief called the news report that two Army units made an "unauthorized" movement towards the Indian capital on the night of January 16 "fables of a sick mind", "absurd and deplorable" and said there was no requirement to "notify" the government about what was a "routine exercise".

"Notify for what? What was happening? We keep doing this so many times. I don't think one or two units should ever bother anyone. It's not as if the whole of armored division was marching towards Delhi. This is a figment of imagination," General Singh said.

Citing intelligence agencies, the Indian Express newspaper said in a report on Tuesday there was an "unexpected" and "non-notified " movement of two elite army units towards the national capital on the night of Jan. 16.

It was the same day army chief General V.K. Singh approached the country's Supreme Court over his date of birth controversy. The mechanized infantry based in Hisar (a strike formation in northern state of Haryana) moved in the direction of the Indian capital, 150 km away, the paper said.

The movement of the entire unit of mechanized infantry, with Russian-made armored fighting vehicles carried on 48 tank transporters, was confirmed by routine lookouts, it added.

Another unit -- identified as a large element of the 50th Para Brigade based at Agra -- was also moving towards the Indian capital, the report said, raising suspicions of a coup attempt by the army.

However, the Army dismissed coup fears and said that the exercise was to check effectiveness in fog.
