Indian gov't asks military to be extra vigilant after Taliban attacks
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-04-16 16:25

The Indian government Monday asked the country's armed forces to be more vigilant in the wake of a series of 18-hour-long attacks mounted by the Taliban on the Afghan capital Sunday.

"The situation in Af-Pak (Afghanistan-Pakistan) region continues to be a cause of concern," Indian Defense Minister A.K. Antony told top Army commanders attending a three-day conference in the national capital.

The Defense Minister also reiterated India's commitment to support and assist Afghanistan for its development.

"India remains steadfast in its commitment to provide support and assistance to Afghanistan so that it evolves into a stable country, strengthened by pluralism and free from external interference," he said.

Taliban Sunday launched what's being claimed as the most widespread attack in Kabul since an assault on the U.S. Embassy and NATO headquarters last September. The attacks lasted for over 18 hours, in which at least eight policemen were killed while 36 militants were gunned down. All expatriate Indians are reportedly safe.
