Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-04-18 16:16
A number of policemen Wednesday sustained injuries in fierce clashes that broke out between jail authorities and inmates inside a prison in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh's Meerut city, an official said.

Senior Supreintendent of Police A Satya Narayan said that clashes broke out over minor arguments when the jail inmates entered the mess to have their breakfast.

"When the constables tried to intervene they were attacked by the inmates. The prisoners burnt the gas cylinders and pelted stones on jail authorities. Deputy Jailor including some constables and few prisoners were injured in the incident," he told the media.

Local TV channels reported that gunfire was heard from inside the jail premises and beamed footage of thick smoke coming out of the prison as fire tenders rushed to the spot.

"A probe has been ordered into the incident," the official added.
