Indian scientist suspected of left-wing tendency released
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-04-19 10:34
The internationally acclaimed Indian scientist Partho Sarothi Roy, who was suspected of left-wing tendency earlier this month and was released from jail on Wednesday, lashed out at the West Bengal state government, saying "dark days have descended in the state."

Addressing a press meet at the Press Club here this evening, he said, "I returned from the United States to serve my country and particularly the state of West Bengal. I was just protesting the eviction of some slum dwellers and was arrested on false charges and had to spend ten days in jail."

The relief came two days after eminent national and international personalities including U.S.-based academician- intellectual Noam Chomsky wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh seeking Roy's release.

"There is total violation of democracy in West Bengal. Justice will prevail only if five of my other friends who too were protesting are released immediately. I am not a Naxal and have no connections with them," he said.

An assistant professor at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research at Kalyani in Nadia district, Roy was arrested with 68 others on April 8 for their alleged involvement in a clash with police during a rally on April 4.

The West Bengal state government is led by the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

"While all the protesters were released one by one, I and my five friends including some women were implicated with trumped up charges and sent to jail," he said.

The eminent scientist said, "my students and my family faced mental trauma. My students suffered since I could not take some important classes in a crucial semester. I am researching on cancer and that too has been affected. I reiterate that after fulfilling my obligation as a teacher I will always stand by the poor and downtrodden."

"When I returned to West Bengal, after refusing faculty position in two famous American universities in 2008, I too participated in the protest meetings against the then Left Front government for evicting peasants to set up industries. I too have a small contribution for this change of power in West Bengal," he said.
