S. Korean ruling party lawmaker faces questioning over bribery allegations
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-07-05 11:48

A South Korean ruling party lawmaker known to have close ties to President Lee Myung-bak was summoned by prosecutors Thursday for questioning over bribery allegations.

Chung Doo-un, a three-term legislator of Lee's ruling Saenuri Party, is suspected of receiving kickbacks from Solomon Savings Bank before the 2007 election where Lee was elected president.

Operations of the troubled savings bank were suspended in May due to liquidity shortage and illegal lending, with its head Lim Suk charged with bribery and embezzlement.

The 55-year-old lawmaker, a former aide to Lee when he served as mayor of Seoul, is believed to have introduced the president's elder brother Lee Sang-deuk to Lim.

The elder Lee was recently summoned for separate questioning over suspicions he took money from local savings banks to help them avoid regulatory penalties.
