S. Korea to send tents to strife-torn Myanmar
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-07-17 15:57

South Korea will send tents to Myanmar as the country faces a refugee crisis after sectarian violence claimed dozens of life, the foreign ministry here said Tuesday.

The country will later this week send 700 tents worth some 200, 000 U.S. dollars at the request of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and will consider providing more if necessary, the ministry said in a statement.

The tents will provide temporary shelter for about 3,000 refugees, according to the ministry.

The sectarian clashes between Muslim Rohingyas and ethnic Rakhine Buddhists in Rakhine State in western Myanmar have displaced 52,000 people.
