India, Pakistan border guards exchange fire on Kashmir border

India andPakistanborder guards exchanged fire on international border in Kashmir, officials said Monday.

The ceasefire violation took place Sunday night along Budhwar and Kot Kubba posts in Arnia sector of in R S Pora, around 45 km southwest of Jammu, the winter capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

According to officials, Pakistani Rangers without any provocation resorted to small arms firing on Indian forward posts guarded by India's border guards of Border Security Force (BSF).

India's official broadcaster - All India Radio (AIR) Monday said BSF personnel guarding the border returned the fire.

"The exchange lasted for almost one hour," AIR said.

However, no loss of life or damage to property was reported in the exchange between two sides.

New Delhi and Islamabad in 2003 agreed to observe a ceasefire along the International Border and LoC in Kashmir. Though some violations have been reported on both sides, the ceasefire remains in effect.

Kashmir, the Himalayan region divided between India and Pakistan is claimed by both in full. Since their Independence from British, the two countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir.
