Shoot at sight order and indefinite curfew have been imposed in riot-torn areas of two district of India's north east state Assam as four bodies were found by the police Monday morning from the area where violent clashes between Bodo tribesmen and Muslims had left 56 people dead and half a million people homeless.

"The situation is tense but under control in the Bodoland Territorial Area District (BTAD). What is surprising is that among the two bodies were of persons who had taken shelter in one of the relief in Chirang district. They must have gone out and possibly abducted and then killed,"a police officer from state capital in Guwahati said over telephone.

The clashes started on July 20 when two Muslim student leaders were allegedly attached by Bodo tribesmen and continued unabated for a week with rampant killings and arson.

Paramilitary forces were deployed but failed to control the situation and there were allegations by Bodo leaders that "Muslim fundamentalists send in infiltrators from neighbouring Bangladesh to participate in the violence."

The Bodo tribesmen had for long been protesting against Muslim settlers in the BTAD, alleging they were infiltrators from Bangladesh.

The deployment of Indian Army too was delayed which staged flag marches. Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who is elected from the state to the Rajya Sabha (upper House of the Indian parliament) , during his tour of the area on July 28 assured the victims of a "proper inquiry."

Indian Home Minister P. Chidambaram also toured the riot torn districts for two days on July 30 and 31 and admitted that " infiltration from Bangladesh was a serious problem in Assam."
