Heat wave leaves 14 people dead in S. Korea in 2 months
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-08-09 16:16

A heat wave in South Korea has killed 14 people in the past two months, while also causing the deaths of over one million livestock, the government said Thursday.

The Ministry of Health and Welfare said 14 people have died between early June and Aug. 8, with 11 of the deaths reported within just two weeks after nationwide heat wave warnings were issued on July 25.

While most areas in the country have suffered from the sweltering heat, the peak temperature in the capital city of Seoul stayed above 35 degrees Celsius for seven consecutive days starting Aug. 1.

The Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said 967,156 chickens, 41,660 ducks, 6,000 quails, 518 pigs and six cows have also died because of the heat wave since late July.

Meanwhile, massive algae outbreaks in rivers caused by the continuing heat wave have prompted Seoul to issue its first algae warning in four years for some parts of the Han River, the source of drinking water for Seoul.
