No-confidence motion against Noda vetoed
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-08-10 07:59

Japan's lower house on late Thursday vetoed the no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda.

The motion was submitted on Tuesday by six small opposition parties including People's Life First, a newly founded one by Ichiro Ozawa who just left Noda's Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) to protest against the government's tax hike plan.

On late Wednesday, Noda agreed with main opposition Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and New Komeito's leaders to dissolve the lower house and call a general election soon in exchange for passage of his sales tax hike legislation.

Following the three party leaders' agreement late Wednesday, the two main opposition parties have decided not to support the no- confidence motion, according to Kyodo news.

The controversial social security and tax reform bills, including doubling the sales tax rate to 10 percent by 2015 to tackle the nation's swelling social security costs, are expected to be approved by the House of Councilors on Friday.

The current lower house members' term ends in August 2013.
