Police arrest yoga guru in Indian capital
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2012-08-13 17:50

Indian police Monday detained yoga exponent Baba Ramdev in order to prevent him and his thousands of supporters from marching to Parliament in the national capital, a senior police official said.

"Ramdev has been detained in central Delhi and taken into custody. Hundreds of his supporters were also detained and taken to a jail set up temporarily. We will decide whether to release them on personal bond or produce them in court," he said on condition of anonymity.

The yoga guru's fast against corruption entered its fifth day and he on Sunday announced at his fast venue that he would march to Parliament to meet the top ruling leaders and ministers to talk about his demands which include steps to bring back black money illegally stashed away in foreign banks by Indians.

"We had to go to Parliament, but we are being stopped at the behest of the Indian government," Ramdev told the media before being herded to a bus by the police.

Ramdev had Sunday warned to intensify his protests if Prime Minister Manmohan Singh didn't keep his promise to bring back black money from banks abroad.

The Indian government has not yet paid any heed to his agitation.
