Indonesian military to implement terror early-detection program in community
Last Updated(Beijing Time):2013-01-09 17:57

Indonesian military (TNI) will intensify efforts aimed at building the public's capacity in detecting the presence of people suspected of involved in terrorism activities this year as part of its contribution to continue the country's anti-terrorism drive, a senior military officer said here Wednesday.

"Learning from public participation to address terrorism issue in 2012, we want to increase their capacity by implementing the Bhakti TNI among the society this year. This measure was highly expected to incite early warning detection drive on terrorism activities among the people,"Defense Deputy Minister Lieut. Gen. Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin told a press conference.

He said that public's involvement in detecting the presence of terror suspects has been increasing last year as many arrests against terrorists suspects were resulted from information from the public.

The Bhakti TNI was intended to hone up public's knowledge and skills on early warning detection on strangers around their neighborhood who are possibly members of terrorist group intending to carry out attacks.

Meanwhile, TNI Commander Admiral Agus Suhartono said that the military would closely team up with the government's anti- terrorism agency (BNPT) in the region and police in carrying out the program. "They have their own programs in addressing terrorism problem across the country. Implementation of our program would synergize their efforts,"Agus told Xinhua on the sidelines of the session.

He emphasized that target of the TNI program in the community is to make people understand the danger of terrorism and make them be proactive in providing information on unusual activities conducted by strangers in their neighborhood.

Indonesia saw escalating activities related to terrorism lately. The freshest one was the raid on terrorists'hideout in Dompu, West Nusatenggara (NTB) province late last week in which five terrorists were killed. Police found 50 kilogram of bomb assembled by those terrorists in their hideout.
