Ban Ki-moon, Secretary- General of the United Nations, reaffirmed Sunday that the possession of nuclear weapons by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) was unacceptable, and called on the DPRK to comply sincerely and fully with the Security Council resolutions.

Ban made the remarks during a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on the sidelines of the Fifth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) held in Yokohama, Japan's port city near Tokyo.

The two also exchanged views on the abduction issue. Abe expressed his determination to resolve the matter completely during his administration, and sought cooperation from the UN Secretary-General. Ban Ki-moon expressed his understanding and support in this regard.

Furthermore, Abe stated that Japan's door for dialogue is always open regarding the situation of Northeast Asia.

Launched in 1993, the TICAD was co-organized by the Japanese government and the United Nations among others.
